Looking for the best restaurants in Maceió? This guide brings together 26 places to eat, including restaurants, pizzerias and a gelato shop, with enough detail to help you choose a meal rather than just collect names. We also include Serraria in the upper part of the city and Cruz das Almas, Garça Torta and Riacho Doce on Maceió’s northern coast.
The dishes marked “Our recommendations” are personal choices by Marcelo Pergentino (@mpergentino.andaza) and Alê Cavalcante (@alecavacalnte.andaza).

How to read the price bands
We use three relative price bands per person: $ budget-friendly, $$ mid-range, $$$ expensive. These are estimates based on our experience, not fixed meal prices. The $ symbols are a comparison scale; they do not mean US dollars. Restaurant bills in Brazil are charged in Brazilian reais (BRL or R$). Your total depends on what you order. Opening hours and reservation arrangements can change, so check directly with the restaurant before going.

Restaurants in Ponta Verde

Wanchakoaward-winning Peruvian cooking in Maceió

Wanchako opened in 1996 and is described as Brazil’s first Peruvian restaurant. In 2025 it moved to a new building a short distance from the beachfront, beside Hotel Intercity. Ceviche is its signature dish, with fish, seafood and meat also on the menu. Chef Simone Bert, who appeared on the Brazilian edition of MasterChef Profissionais, leads the kitchen.
Over the years, Veja magazine has recognized Wanchako in several local restaurant categories, including best restaurant, dining for couples, international cooking, fish, shrimp, chef and seafood.
It is one of the city’s more expensive restaurants and one we often recommend. For us, the meal is worth the higher bill.
It opens in the evening from Monday to Saturday and is closed on Sundays.

Janga also has branches at Maceió Shopping and Parque Shopping.

Massagueirinhacrab served in its shell and fresh fish

Massagueirinha is a good choice for an informal lunch. Its casquinha de siri, seasoned crab meat served in the shell, is our favorite in Brazil. There are also small cups of seafood broth, fish dishes and other seafood. The setting is simple and welcoming, sometimes with live music, and the menu is a good introduction to cooking from Alagoas.
There are three branches in Maceió and another beside Mundaú Lagoon in Marechal Deodoro. Of these, we prefer the cooking at the Ponta Verde branch.
- Ponta Verde branch: Rua Deputado José Lages, 1105, Ponta Verde
- Jatiúca branch: Avenida Doutor Antônio Gomes de Barros, 910, Jatiúca
- Gruta de Lourdes branch: Avenida Fernandes Lima, 3595, Gruta de Lourdes

Hatsu Izakayaan established Japanese restaurant in Ponta Verde
An izakaya is a Japanese bar and restaurant serving snacks to share, sushi and hot dishes. Hatsu is in the boulevard area of the Maceió Facilities building. Tables can fill up at busy times, so arriving early or booking is sensible.
Fresh fish and contemporary Japanese cooking have made Hatsu one of our long-standing choices in Maceió. Other Japanese restaurants have opened since, but it remains among those we recommend. In 2017, Vip magazine included it in its list of the best new restaurants.
The hours listed in the original guide are 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., with lunch on Thursdays and Fridays from noon to 3 p.m. Check with the restaurant before setting out.

diBosco GelatoAndaza’s gelato recommendation

If you are choosing one gelato shop in Maceió, our recommendation is diBosco in Ponta Verde. It makes its own flavors, including Marceneiro, with honey, yogurt and orange. The shop has lactose-free and sugar-free options, a vegan cone, and options intended for babies and pets. It is a short walk from the beachfront, making it an easy final stop after a stroll.
The flavors change, and there are often new ones to try. We especially like the handmade cone and the signature diBosco flavor, a yogurt gelato with amarena cherries.
It is one of our favorite gelato shops in Brazil.

It is an established local restaurant now in its second generation, with a relaxed dining room and a loyal Maceió clientele. The beans are particularly good, and Akuaba is our choice when we want acarajé in the Bahian style.

Which restaurants in Maceió are in the higher price band?
Wanchako is often mentioned in local guides as one of Maceió’s most expensive and formal restaurants. We place it in our $$$ band, alongside Janga Praia, Garuva, Hatsu Izakaya, Maria Antonieta, Basilico, Mahr, Vero, Toá and Lua Cheia. This is a relative comparison, not a measured ranking of meal prices.
What local food should you try in Maceió?
These are good starting points:
- Sururu: a shellfish associated with Mundaú Lagoon, cooked in coconut milk with onion, garlic, coriander and tomato. Sururu is recognized as part of Alagoas’ intangible cultural heritage.
- Casquinha de siri: seasoned crab meat served in its shell, a familiar starter in fish and seafood restaurants. Our favorite is at Massagueirinha.
- Fish and seafood: with lagoons on one side and the sea on the other, fish and seafood are central to local cooking. You will find grilled fish, shrimp, octopus and lobster. Janga Praia, Massagueirinha and Mahr are good places to start.
For breakfast or a snack, look for tapioca, a flatbread made from cassava starch, and cuscuz, the steamed corn preparation common in Northeast Brazil. For drinks, try fruit juices or batidas, Brazilian mixed drinks, made with fruits such as caju (cashew fruit), cajá, mangaba and acerola. A separate guide to breakfast and snack stops is planned for the blog.
Where are Maceió’s restaurant streets?
It depends on the meal you want. In Pajuçara, Rua Doutor Lessa de Azevedo has Vero and Grazie a short walk from the beach. Jatiúca has the widest concentration of restaurants in the city. For lagoon cooking, the Ruazinha Gastronômica in Pontal da Barra is beside Mundaú Lagoon, with restaurants serving sururu, maçunim (another local shellfish), shrimp and octopus. Rua Alípio Barbosa da Silva is the main street in that area, and O Peixarão is one of the restaurants mentioned in local guides. Restaurants on the beaches farther south and north in Alagoas will be covered in a separate guide.
How to choose a restaurant for your plans
- First visit to Maceió: Toá or Anamá for the view, plus lunch at Janga Praia.
- Romantic dinner: Wanchako, Maria Antonieta, Vero or Garuva.
- A large family group: Janga Praia, Divina Gula, Beach Prime or Armazém Guimarães.
- Regional cooking: Anamá, Massagueirinha, Bodega do Sertão or the restaurants in Pontal da Barra.
- A change from seafood: Akuaba (Bahian), Divina Gula (Minas Gerais), Maria Antonieta (Italian), Hatsu (Japanese) or Wanchako (Peruvian).
- A more moderate bill: Del Popollo, Grazie, Armazém Guimarães, Divina Gula and Xi’an. These are in the mid-range band, not fixed-price budget meals.
Opening hours, addresses and menus change, and several restaurants close on Mondays. Check the restaurant’s Instagram profile or phone number before going.
Why so many restaurants are close to one another
Most restaurants in this guide are close to the waterfront between Pajuçara and Jatiúca. This is also where homes, hotels and activity are concentrated throughout the year. For visitors, that makes it easier to find several meals near where they stay. If you are thinking of living in Maceió, being able to walk to restaurants is one practical feature to compare between neighborhoods.
To work out which neighborhood suits your plans, read our guide to the best neighborhoods to live in Maceió (in Portuguese).
